Easy, tie the alternate lines to the center of the string. Remember, every one has to pull tight on thier cans. There's a way to do call waiting too, but I forget.

Choose your string carefully. The lines need to be taut enough to transmit vibrations to and from each can. A metal wire might work better with more cans. It is stiff enough that it would transmit something even if it is not as taut as desired. It is also more dangerous. Metal wire can transmit electric current as well as cuts to an unsuspecting user/operator.
put a bunch of cans on a string and don't use them and shout at each other at the same time, then ignore most people as in the mute button, which most people use during a conference call anyways
use a short splice. Better still move on to the new pvc pipe technology and use some tees.

special twine that can be unwound into several strings....one end tied to one can...and the end with multiples are obviously tied to multiple cans for conferencing..
