Mormons: Do Evangelical Christians still protest your church services?

I'm not a member anymore, but I remember when I was, there would ALWAYS be some kind of Evangelical Christian group trying to "save us" at temple pageants, or general conference.

The funny thing is that their idea of "saving" someone is parading in the temple garments, calling the prophet a pedophile and screaming that we were all going to burn in a lake of fire.

Does this behavior still happen frequently?

Now in SLC they have to buy a permit to protest anywhere near the conference center. Good Evangelical Christian Groups have in the last couple of years bought many of the permits and then not used them just so that we can have a peaceful conference. It is remarkable.

I've seen it happen, but for the most part I compare them to people like the Westboro Baptist Church. In their heads they think they're doing the right thing, but no one else agrees with them. I certainly don't lump all Baptists into the crazy category because of the above mentioned group. I would no sooner do so with any other Christian denomination just because some of their members have forgotten what their own religion teaches.

I live in Salt lake and see some standing on the street raising their voices; which voices are typically disrespectful and down right rude/offensive.

Every time I go by them, I compare their message of "hatred and bucolic insensitivity," with a message of love, respect, doing good to your fellow man, that I hear inside the Mormon General Conference. I then ask myself which message is most appealing to me, which message is most Christlike,.

It is a no brainer. That is why I continue to be a livelong Mormon

I just went to General Conference a couple of weeks ago, and yes, there were some radical protesters there. And there usually are some around Temple Square on a daily basis.

I am not sure their tactics are "converting" anyone.

Once we got to the Conference center, their were a group of Sister Missionaries from Temple square singing hymns from the hymn book. It was really lovely to hear them, with all their different accents from all over the world, joining together to sing praises to our Heavenly Father, and our Savior. It made me completely forget about those outside who were spewing hate.

Yes, it still happens. There is a congregation in my area (Chicago) that has taken field trips to Salt Lake City to "protest" the Mormons. And there are still a few that go to Nauvoo every summer to "save" the Mormons.

But you have to keep it in perspective. It's really only a few evangelicals that do that every year (compared to millions that wouldn't do something like that)...they don't represent REAL Christians.

As far as I know it does. I'm no longer a member either, but they're always at the Easter Pageants and Temple Lights for Christmas. I know I want to get converted on a street corner! They practically stuff their pamphlets in your pockets. I think it's so silly. Let's put it this way; Who listens to a screaming kid that doesn't get their way? No one. Who listens to a screaming christian when they're passing judgement to people on the street? You guessed it.

i assume they are radicals and don't make up the christian body.

I've seen them around temple square before. I was with a few samoans at the time. Don't mess with samoans. They wanted to beat the crap out of them.

I heard it mellowed out now. I think because some members decided to sing hymns outside of the general conference meetings.

I would feel like an idiot listening to those hymns while crying destruction.

It does still happen. The last time I was at Temple Square, there were people right outside the gates holding signs and yelling that we were going to hell. What they don't realize is that people visit temple square all the time that aren't LDS, and only come to see the architecture and the Christos. Most don't ever convert, and don't want to. I think it's lame. You catch more bees with honey then with vinegar.

Man, why don't I remember this!? I always recall them talking bad about mormon in the news and I wished they would leave the mormons alone and see them in a good light when I was mormon, but I don;t rmember protesters when I was mormon int he 70's and 80's, when did these protests start?

Last time I went to SLC for General Conferance was '05 and there were protesters there. Some act like you describe, which is very counter-productive. But there are others not as visible who just talk to people. They were nice, even if they thought I was misguided.

Yup - last year I had to wade through a few to get to the Manti pagaent...

And the news continues to show more demonstrators at Conference every 6 months...

Heard an interesting story of some missionaries starting to sing hymns nearby to drown them out - lol

They call themselves Christian and us not, yet they are the ones spewing hate........

Most other Christians aren't like that, though. The protestors are really the ones that were deceived by the devil ;)

I have never been to any of those events but I hear it still happens

I'm a Christian and I've never protested anything....

I have not seen it yet in my life, but I'm sure I will some day.

gw

When I was in high school a group was outside the Seattle Temple as we were arriving for a temple trip. They were handing out literature and little bibles. I took one of the little bibles but none of the literature.

I've also attended conference and yes, there are always protesters out there. There are also every day protesters that camp outside Temple Square and harass the people walking by. Even when they're just trying to cross the street to go to ZCMI Center. Lame.

I don't really understand why these people feel the need to do things like that but it didn't turn me or my friends against the Church so I guess they failed their mission.
